Yellow Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) is a small, colourful semi-land crab with a bright yellow to orange body and pale eyes, from the rainforests of Southeast Asia, mainly Indonesia. If you are looking for a vampire crab for sale in the UK, the yellow form is one of the brightest, and ours measure around 4 to 5cm including the legs.
Location
Yellow vampire crabs live along rainforest streams and on the damp forest floor, spending most of their time on land among leaf litter, roots and moss, and dipping into shallow water to drink and moult.
Diet
Vampire crabs are omnivorous scavengers. Feed sinking pellets and crab or shrimp foods, plus frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and small pieces of blanched vegetable. Remove leftover food so the land area stays clean.
Care
Keep yellow vampire crabs in a paludarium, not a normal fish tank. Around two thirds land and one third shallow water works well, with water no deeper than a few centimetres and easy ramps to climb out, as they can drown without land. Keep the temperature between 22 and 28ยฐC with high humidity. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are excellent climbers and escape artists. They can catch small fish and shrimp, so keep them in a species-only setup or with fast, surface-dwelling fish.
Habitat
Recreate the forest floor with a soil or sand land area, moss, live plants, leaf litter and plenty of hiding places such as caves and driftwood. Mist regularly to keep humidity high, and keep the water clean and dechlorinated.
Breeding
Vampire crabs are one of the easier crabs to breed. Females carry their eggs under the body for several weeks, and the young hatch as tiny, fully formed crabs with no larval stage. Plenty of moss and leaf litter gives the babies cover, as adults may eat them.
