Synodontis Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris), also known as the upside down catfish, is a unique and popular freshwater species known for its spotted markings and habit of swimming belly up. Our upside down catfish for sale grow to around 10cm and are well loved by aquarium enthusiasts for their peaceful, playful nature, making them a fascinating addition to any tank.

Location

Native to the Congo River basin in Central Africa, Synodontis Catfish thrive in warm, slow flowing waters with plenty of hiding places. They do well in aquariums that mimic these natural environments.

Diet

Synodontis Catfish are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods, including high quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. Offering a balanced diet helps maintain their health and active behaviour.

Care

Synodontis Catfish prefer water temperatures between 24 and 28°C and slightly acidic to neutral water. A well-maintained tank with good filtration is essential, as these fish are bottom dwellers that produce a fair amount of waste. They should be kept in tanks with ample hiding spots and plenty of swimming space. They are sociable and do best in small groups.

Habitat

In the aquarium, Synodontis Catfish do well with a sandy or fine gravel substrate and plenty of hiding places provided by driftwood, rocks, and plants. They are peaceful by nature but do best in tanks with other non-aggressive species.

Breeding

Breeding Synodontis Catfish in captivity can be difficult but is possible under the right conditions. A well-maintained breeding tank with clean water and stable temperatures is necessary to encourage spawning. The female will lay eggs on flat surfaces, which the male fertilises.
