Striped Raphael Catfish (Platydoras armatulus) is a distinctive and hardy species known for its striking body markings. This bottom dwelling catfish has a sleek appearance with a dark body and bold cream stripes, making it an interesting addition to community aquariums. Also known as the talking catfish for the croaking sounds it makes, our raphael catfish for sale can grow to around 20cm.
Location
Native to South America, the Striped Raphael Catfish is found in the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná river basins, in slow flowing rivers and streams. It prefers warm, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions typical of its natural habitat.
Diet
As an omnivorous catfish, the Striped Raphael will consume a variety of foods, including high quality sinking pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and occasional plant matter. Feed after lights out, as they are nocturnal. They may eat very small fish, so choose tank mates too large to swallow. A well balanced diet will keep the fish healthy and active.
Care
This species is relatively easy to care for, but they are nocturnal and prefer to hide during the day. They are best kept in tanks with peaceful tank mates. Striped Raphael Catfish prefer water temperatures between 24 and 28°C and require stable water conditions. Their bony plates and sharp spines can tangle in a net, so move them with a container instead.
Habitat
In the wild, Striped Raphael Catfish are found in muddy riverbeds and slow flowing waters. Replicate these conditions in a roomy aquarium by providing a soft substrate, caves or driftwood to hide in, and gentle filtration.
Breeding
Breeding Striped Raphael Catfish is rarely achieved in home aquariums.
