Staghorn Sun Snail is a fascinating freshwater nerite snail, prized for its spiralled shell and decorative staghorn-like spikes. Also known as the sun nerite snail, it adds both function and flair to planted aquariums, helping to manage algae while enhancing the tank’s visual appeal.
Location
This snail is native to Southeast Asia, where it lives in coastal rivers and streams with warm water that is rich in minerals. In the wild, they graze on biofilm, algae, and detritus along submerged surfaces.
Diet
The Staghorn Sun Snail is a natural algae grazer. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as courgette or spinach, and occasionally snail food rich in calcium to support shell health.
Care
Keep them in stable water conditions with a temperature range of 22 to 28°C and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid medications containing copper and make sure calcium is present to maintain a strong shell.
Habitat
Ideal for peaceful aquariums, these snails do best in planted tanks with plenty of hardscape and smooth surfaces to graze. They’re compatible with most non-aggressive fish and invertebrates, making them a great community tank addition. A secure lid helps stop them climbing out.
Breeding
Staghorn Sun Snails won’t breed in freshwater aquariums, so they will never overrun your tank.
