Silver Tip Tetra (Hasemania nana) is a small, lively schooling fish with a golden copper body, a dark stripe at the base of the tail and bright white tips on its fins. Our silver tip tetras grow to around 5cm and bring constant movement and warm colour to a community aquarium.

Location

Native to the São Francisco river basin in eastern Brazil, where it lives in slow flowing streams and small tributaries.

Diet

Silver tip tetras are omnivores and readily accept good quality flakes and micro pellets, plus frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm. Feed small amounts two or three times a day, as a varied diet keeps their golden colour strong.

Care

They are comfortable between 22 and 28°C with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. As very active swimmers, they need a tank of at least 60 litres, good filtration and regular partial water changes.

Habitat

Keep them in groups of 8 or more. In a good sized group they are peaceful, but they can nip long, flowing fins, so avoid keeping them with bettas or fancy guppies. Plant the edges of the tank and leave open swimming space in the middle; a darker substrate really shows off their colour.

Breeding

Silver tip tetras are egg scatterers that spawn among fine leaved plants or java moss. The adults will eat the eggs, so move them out after spawning. The eggs hatch within a couple of days, and the fry need infusoria at first, then baby brine shrimp.

Silver tip tetras mix well with peppered cory catfish, blood fin tetras and tiny ember tetras. Buy more and save, with multi-buy discounts from 5 fish.
