Santa Claus Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a striking freshwater fish with bold red and white colouring that gives it a festive look all year round. Also known as the koi platy, our koi platies for sale grow to around 5 to 6cm and add lively colour to any community aquarium.
Location
The platy is native to Central America, from Mexico to Honduras, where it thrives in warm, tropical waters. The Santa Claus colour form is captive bred.
Diet
This species is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods such as high quality flakes, live or frozen brine shrimp, and plant matter like algae and blanched spinach.
Care
Santa Claus Platies are easy to care for and do well in temperatures between 22 and 28°C. They are ideal for community tanks and are happiest in groups, with two or three females for every male.
Habitat
These fish naturally inhabit slow flowing rivers and streams. Recreate their environment with plants, rocks, and a gentle filtration system to mimic their native habitat.
Breeding
As livebearers, Santa Claus Platies give birth to live young. They breed easily in aquariums, and the fry should be kept in a separate tank or among dense plants to protect them from adult fish.
