Red Tiger Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a stunning freshwater fish with a bright red body and dark markings that resemble a tiger’s stripes. Our red tiger platies grow to around 5 to 6cm, and these vibrant red platy fish add a touch of colour and movement to any aquarium, making them a favourite among fish keepers.
Location
The platy is native to Central America, from Mexico to Honduras, where it lives in slow flowing rivers and streams. The red tiger colour form is captive bred. It thrives in warm, tropical environments with abundant plant life.
Diet
As omnivores, Red Tiger Platies enjoy a varied diet that includes high quality flakes, live or frozen brine shrimp, and plant matter such as algae and blanched spinach.
Care
These fish are easy to care for, thriving in water temperatures between 22 and 28°C. Red Tiger Platies are peaceful and do well in community tanks, making them ideal for beginners. Keep two or three females for every male.
Habitat
In the wild, Red Tiger Platies are found in slow flowing waters with dense vegetation. Recreate this environment in your aquarium by adding live plants, rocks, and gentle filtration.
Breeding
Red Tiger Platies are livebearers, making them easy to breed in aquariums. The fry should be kept in a separate tank or among dense plants to protect them from adult fish.
