Red Fin Shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum), also known as the rainbow shark, is a vibrant and energetic freshwater fish known for its distinctive red fins and sleek body. Our rainbow sharks for sale grow to around 15cm and are a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts due to their striking appearance and active nature, adding a dynamic element to any tank.
Location
Native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins in Southeast Asia, Red Fin Sharks are commonly found in slow flowing rivers and streams. In aquariums, they require spacious tanks with ample swimming space to accommodate their active behaviour and natural instincts.
Diet
This omnivorous species thrives on a balanced diet, including high quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. A well rounded diet helps maintain their health and vibrant red fins.
Care
Red Fin Sharks prefer stable water temperatures between 24 and 28°C and clean, well oxygenated water. They thrive in larger tanks with adequate filtration, as their high activity levels require good water quality to stay healthy.
Habitat
In the aquarium, they benefit from open swimming spaces, dark substrates, and some decorations like driftwood and rocks for occasional hiding. Red Fin Sharks are best kept with non-aggressive species due to their bold nature. Keep only one per tank, as they are territorial with their own kind and similar looking fish.
Breeding
Breeding Red Fin Sharks in captivity is uncommon. Like other species of freshwater sharks, they are more likely to breed in the wild. Maintaining optimal water conditions can encourage natural spawning behaviours, though it’s rare in home aquariums.
