Orange Spotted Rabbit Snail is a striking freshwater snail with a yellow body covered in bright orange spots, a tall dark spiral shell and the long, drooping “rabbit ear” tentacles that give rabbit snails (Tylomelania) their name. Our orange spotted snails grow to around 5 to 7cm, graze algae all day and won’t overrun your tank.
Location
Rabbit snails come from the lakes and rivers of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where they live in warm, slightly alkaline water over sand and rock.
Diet
The Orange Spotted Rabbit Snail grazes algae, biofilm and decaying plant matter. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, snail food and blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach, and include calcium rich foods to keep their shells strong.
Care
Keep them in water between 24 and 28°C with a pH of 7.5 to 8.3. Stable, mineral rich water supports healthy shell growth, so carry out regular partial water changes. Avoid copper based medications, which are toxic to snails.
Habitat
Provide a sand or fine gravel substrate, as rabbit snails like to burrow, with rocks, driftwood and plants to graze on. They are peaceful and safe with shrimp and community fish, but avoid loaches, pufferfish and assassin snails, which prey on snails.
Breeding
Rabbit snails breed slowly, producing a single baby at a time, so they won’t overrun your tank. They breed in normal freshwater, with no need for brackish conditions.
