Horned Nerite Snail

Horned Nerite Snail, also known as the horn snail, is a hardy freshwater snail recognised for the small horns on its striped shell and its algae cleaning abilities. Our horned nerite snails for sale are ideal for beginner and experienced aquarists who want to maintain a clean tank without disrupting other livestock.

Location

This snail is typically found in rivers, streams, and shallow waters across Southeast Asia. It adapts well to freshwater aquarium environments, especially those that replicate its natural slow flowing habitat with stable water conditions.

Diet

Horned Nerite Snails feed primarily on algae and biofilm growing on glass, rocks, and decorations. Supplement their diet with algae wafers or blanched vegetables like courgette to ensure a balanced intake, especially in well maintained tanks with minimal algae.

Care

These snails thrive in water temperatures between 22°C and 28°C with a pH range from 7.0 to 8.0. Avoid medications containing copper as they are toxic to invertebrates. Regular water changes and consistent parameters help keep them healthy and active.

Habitat

Aquariums with fine gravel or sand substrates, driftwood, and aquatic plants offer ideal conditions. Horned Nerite Snails are excellent algae grazers and spend their time exploring surfaces. Make sure your tank is securely covered, as they may occasionally travel above the waterline.

Breeding

Breeding Horned Nerite Snails in home aquariums can be challenging. They often require brackish water to complete their life cycle. While they may lay eggs in freshwater, successful hatching typically occurs in more saline conditions, so they will not overrun your tank.
