Harlequin Rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha), sometimes called the harlequin tetra, is a small, active fish known for its vibrant copper orange colouration and distinctive triangular black patch on its body. Our harlequin rasboras for sale grow to around 4 to 5cm, and this peaceful species is a popular choice among aquarium hobbyists, offering both beauty and liveliness to community tanks.
Location
Native to the slow flowing streams and peat swamps of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and southern Thailand, the Harlequin Rasbora thrives in warm, soft water. Aquariums that replicate their natural habitat with plenty of plants and open swimming space are ideal for this species.
Diet
Harlequin Rasboras are omnivores and will readily accept a variety of foods. They enjoy high quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet supports their health and vibrant colour.
Care
This species prefers water temperatures between 24 and 28°C and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Keep them in groups of eight or more. Regular water changes and good filtration are important to maintain a healthy environment for the Harlequin Rasbora, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.
Habitat
Harlequin Rasboras do best in well planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water. They are peaceful and enjoy swimming in groups, so they should be housed with other peaceful species in a community tank. Providing hiding spots like driftwood and rocks helps them feel secure.
Breeding
Breeding Harlequin Rasboras in captivity is possible with the right care. Unusually for rasboras, they lay their eggs on the underside of broad leaves, such as Cryptocoryne, and the adults should be removed after spawning to prevent the eggs from being eaten. With proper care, breeding can be successful.
