Gold Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) is a golden variant of the Chinese algae eater, also known as the golden algae eater. These active fish are effective algae grazers while young and are a popular choice for aquarists looking to control algae growth. They can grow to around 25cm, so they suit larger tanks.
Location
Despite the name, the Chinese algae eater is native to the rivers and streams of mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, where it lives in clean, fast flowing water. The gold colour form is captive bred.
Diet
Gold Chinese Algae Eaters graze on algae but also need sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms. As they get older they eat less algae, so a varied diet is important.
Care
These fish are easy to care for. They prefer temperatures between 22 and 28°C and need well filtered, well oxygenated water. They can become territorial as they grow, especially with their own kind, so keep one in most tanks, or a group of five or more in a very large tank. Avoid slow, flat bodied tank mates such as angelfish, which larger algae eaters may latch on to.
Habitat
In their natural habitat, Gold Chinese Algae Eaters are found in fast flowing streams. Replicate this environment in the aquarium with good filtration, some water flow, smooth rocks, and plenty of hiding spots to make them feel secure.
Breeding
Breeding Gold Chinese Algae Eaters in captivity is rare and difficult in home aquariums.
