Gold Barb is a hardy, active schooling fish with a shimmering gold body, green iridescent scales flecked with black, and orange red fins. Our gold barbs grow to around 7cm and are one of the most peaceful barbs, making them a great choice for a lively community aquarium, including tanks kept on the cooler side.
Location
The gold barb is a selectively bred colour form of the Chinese barb, a fish found in rivers, streams and ponds across southern China and northern Vietnam. The gold variety, also known as the Schuberti barb, is hardy and well suited to aquarium life.
Diet
Gold barbs are easy to feed and accept good quality flakes, pellets and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. They also graze on soft algae. A varied diet keeps their colours strong.
Care
Gold barbs are comfortable between 18 and 24°C, so they need little or no heating in a warm room, with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Give them good filtration, regular partial water changes and a tank of 60 litres or more.
Habitat
Keep them in groups of 6 or more. In a good sized group they are peaceful and rarely nip fins, though very slow, long finned fish such as bettas and fancy guppies are best avoided. Provide open swimming space with plants and wood around the edges.
Breeding
Gold barbs are egg scatterers and spawn readily among fine leaved plants or a spawning mop. The adults will eat the eggs, so move them out after spawning if you want to raise fry.
