Indian Glassy Fish (Parambassis ranga), also known as the Indian glassfish or Indian glassy perch, is a small, peaceful see through fish with a transparent body that shows its delicate skeleton and a soft golden sheen in the right light. Our Indian glassfish for sale grow to around 5 to 7cm and make a fascinating talking point in community aquariums when kept in a group.
Location
Native to South and Southeast Asia, the Indian Glassy Fish is found from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to Myanmar and Thailand. It lives in slow flowing rivers, ponds, swamps and coastal waters, usually among dense plants, and can tolerate slightly brackish conditions, although it does not need salt in the aquarium.
Diet
Indian Glassy Fish are micro predators that feed mainly on small live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and bloodworms. Many will learn to take high quality micro pellets or flakes over time, but a regular supply of frozen food keeps them in the best condition.
Care
They prefer water temperatures between 22 and 28°C and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, between 7.0 and 8.0, in moderately hard water. These are shoaling fish that can be shy on their own, so keep them in groups of six or more. They are peaceful with similar sized community fish but may eat very small fry or shrimplets.
Habitat
Provide a well planted aquarium with plenty of cover from plants, driftwood and rocks, along with some open swimming space. Gentle filtration, subdued lighting and a darker substrate help them feel secure and show off their glassy bodies.
Breeding
Breeding Indian Glassy Fish in the aquarium is possible but challenging. Pairs scatter adhesive eggs among fine leaved plants, often in the early morning, and the eggs hatch within a day. The tiny fry need very fine live foods such as infusoria at first, so they are best raised in a separate tank.
