Coral Tiger Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a colourful tiger platy with a pearly white body and bold coral red stripes, so no two fish look quite the same. Our coral tiger platies grow to around 5 to 6cm and are hardy, peaceful and easy to keep, making them a great choice for beginners and community aquariums.
Location
The platy is native to Central America, from southern Mexico through Guatemala and Belize to Honduras, where it lives in slow flowing streams, ditches and marshes with plenty of plants. The coral tiger is a selectively bred colour form.
Diet
Platies are omnivores and accept good quality flakes and small pellets, frozen brine shrimp and daphnia, plus plant foods such as spirulina flakes, algae wafers or blanched courgette.
Care
They are comfortable between 20 and 26°C and prefer hard, slightly alkaline water with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0, which suits most UK tap water. Provide a tank of 60 litres or more, good filtration and regular partial water changes.
Habitat
Coral tiger platies are peaceful and mix well with most community fish of a similar size. Keep one male to every two or three females so the males do not wear the females out, and give them plenty of plants along with open swimming space.
Breeding
As livebearers, females can give birth to live young around every four weeks. Adults will eat the fry, so dense plants such as java moss or floating plants give the young places to hide, or you can move a pregnant female to a breeding box.
