Chocolate Rabbit Snail is a striking freshwater snail with a dark chocolate brown body, long feelers that look like rabbit ears and a tall, sandy coloured cone shaped shell. A gentle type of rabbit snail (Tylomelania), it grazes algae and leftover food and adds something unusual to a peaceful aquarium.
Location
Native to Lake Poso on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where it lives in warm, clear, mineral rich water over sandy and rocky ground.
Diet
Chocolate rabbit snails graze on biofilm, soft algae and leftover fish food. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, sinking pellets and blanched vegetables such as spinach or courgette, plus calcium rich foods for healthy shells. Avoid overfeeding to keep the water clean.
Care
They prefer water between 24 and 28°C with a pH of 7.5 to 8.2, and harder water with plenty of calcium to support shell growth. Like all snails, they are sensitive to copper, so never use medications that contain it. Fit a secure lid, as rabbit snails can climb out.
Habitat
Give them sand or fine gravel to forage in, along with plants, rocks and driftwood to graze on. They are peaceful with fish and shrimp, but avoid snail eaters such as assassin snails, loaches and puffers.
Breeding
Rabbit snails breed slowly, producing a single baby at a time, so they won’t overrun your tank.
