Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a small, brightly coloured fish with a full length red stripe and an electric blue line that are sure to brighten up any aquarium. Our cardinal tetras for sale are peaceful and do well in schools of six or more, making them perfect for community tanks.
Location
Cardinal Tetras are native to the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins in South America, where they live in slow flowing, soft, slightly acidic blackwater streams.
Diet
These tetras are omnivores and accept a variety of foods like high quality flakes, live brine shrimp, and plant matter. Their diet should be well balanced to maintain their vibrant colours.
Care
Cardinal Tetras thrive in temperatures of 24 to 28°C. They should be kept in schools and benefit from planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water and gentle filtration.
Habitat
In their native habitat, these tetras live in shaded waters with little current. You can replicate this environment by using plants, soft substrates, and gentle water flow in your aquarium.
Breeding
Breeding Cardinal Tetras in captivity can be difficult. A separate tank is recommended for the fry to protect them from adult fish and to ensure their survival.

The fish were packed well and the seller replied to my questions. Unfortunately, at least 20 out of the 100 cardinal tetras died within the first few days, with 2 already dead on arrival. The fish also arrived extremely pale and heavily stressed, with almost no red colour. Some of the survivors are slowly colouring up now, but I was very disappointed with their condition on arrival and the number of losses.
