Blue Emperor Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri) is a peaceful schooling tetra with a shimmering silver body and a bold electric blue band along its side. Our blue emperor tetras grow to around 4cm, and the males show the strongest colour, so a group makes a striking sight in a planted community aquarium.
Location
Native to clear, slow flowing forest streams in the Amazon basin of Brazil.
Diet
Blue emperor tetras are omnivores and readily accept good quality flakes and micro pellets, plus frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm. A varied diet keeps their blue colour at its brightest.
Care
They are comfortable between 24 and 27°C with soft to medium water and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Provide a tank of 60 litres or more with gentle flow, good filtration and regular partial water changes.
Habitat
Keep them in groups of 6 or more, ideally 8 to 10, so the males can display to each other. They are peaceful with other small community fish. Plenty of plants, a dark substrate and some floating plants to soften the light will really bring out their blue.
Breeding
Blue emperor tetras are egg scatterers that spawn among fine leaved plants or java moss. The adults will eat the eggs, so move them out after spawning. The fry need infusoria at first, then baby brine shrimp.
Blue emperor tetras mix well with our purple emperor tetras, cardinal tetras and albino cory catfish, or browse all our tetras. Buy more and save, with multi-buy discounts from 5 fish.
