Black Spotted Rabbit Snail is a fascinating freshwater snail, recognised for its ridged brown shell and a black body covered in small white spots. Its unusual appearance and algae grazing habits make it both an aesthetic and practical choice for aquariums. A colourful type of rabbit snail (Tylomelania), it grazes algae without overrunning your tank.
Location
Native to the lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia, the Black Spotted Rabbit Snail is typically found in warm, slightly alkaline waters. These snails dwell in environments with sandy substrates and slow flowing currents.
Diet
Their primary diet consists of algae, biofilm, and soft plant matter. Supplement their feeding with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and foods rich in calcium to support their shell health and nutritional needs.
Care
They thrive in water temperatures between 24 and 28°C and require a pH range of 7.5 to 8.3. An environment rich in minerals helps maintain strong shell growth. Avoid treatments containing copper, as these are toxic to all snail species.
Habitat
Provide a calm, planted tank with a sandy or fine gravel substrate. Black Spotted Rabbit Snails enjoy foraging among plants, rocks, and driftwood, where they clean surfaces while adding to the aquarium’s visual interest.
Breeding
Rabbit snails breed slowly, producing a single baby at a time, so they won’t overrun your tank. They breed in normal freshwater, with no need for brackish conditions.
