Assassin Snail

Assassin Snail (Clea helena) is a predatory freshwater snail known for its unique behaviour and usefulness in controlling unwanted pest snails in the aquarium. Our assassin snails for sale grow to around 2.5cm, and their striped, spiral shells make them both effective and interesting to observe.

Location

Native to Southeast Asia, the Assassin Snail is found in freshwater rivers and ponds where it preys on smaller snails and detritus. In the aquarium, they thrive in environments that replicate these calm, slow-moving waters.

Diet

The Assassin Snail is carnivorous and feeds primarily on other snails, including pest species like Malaysian trumpet snails. It may also consume small amounts of detritus or leftover fish food, making it a helpful clean up crew in aquariums.

Care

Assassin Snails do well in water temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 7.0 and 8.0. Ensure your aquarium is free from copper-based medications, which can harm snails. Regular water changes and stable conditions are essential for their health.

Habitat

Aquariums with sandy or fine gravel substrates and a variety of hiding spots provide the ideal environment for Assassin Snails. These snails are not aggressive towards other tank mates but may compete for space with other bottom dwellers. They also enjoy climbing surfaces like decorations and plants.

Breeding

Assassin snails breed slowly in freshwater aquariums, laying single eggs on hard surfaces, so unlike pest snails they will not overrun your tank. Stable water and a steady supply of food are key to successful breeding.
