Apistogramma Agassizii, also known as Agassiz’s dwarf cichlid, is a stunning and vibrant dwarf cichlid, recognised for its brilliant colouration and peaceful temperament. Known for their striking orange and blue hues, our Apistogramma agassizii for sale are a beautiful addition to soft water aquariums, with males growing to around 8cm and females to around 5cm.
Location
Native to the Amazon River basin, Apistogramma agassizii can be found in slow flowing, slightly acidic waters in South America, particularly in Brazil, Peru and Bolivia. They prefer warm temperatures and soft, tannin stained waters typical of their native habitat.
Diet
These dwarf cichlids are mainly carnivorous and do best on small live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms and daphnia. They will also take high quality flakes and small pellets. A balanced diet ensures their vibrant colours and good health.
Care
Apistogramma agassizii need clean, soft, slightly acidic water and a temperature between 24 and 28°C, as they are sensitive to poor water quality. They do best in peaceful, well planted tanks with other small, peaceful fish. Keep one male with two or three females, as males are territorial.
Habitat
In the wild, these fish inhabit slow flowing streams and riverbanks with plenty of hiding spots and plant life. To replicate their natural environment, provide live plants, rocks, and caves in the aquarium, as well as soft, slightly acidic water.
Breeding
Breeding Apistogramma agassizii can be achieved in a well maintained aquarium. The female lays her eggs inside a cave and guards the eggs and fry. The male is typically less involved in the care of the young, making it important to provide a safe environment for the fry to grow.
