Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata) are one of the most popular and effective algae-eating shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Our amano shrimp for sale grow to around 5cm as adults, and their natural ability to keep tanks clean makes them an essential addition for anyone seeking a healthy and visually appealing aquarium.

Location

Native to freshwater rivers in Japan, Amano Shrimp are known for their resilience and adaptability. In an aquarium, they thrive in water conditions similar to their natural habitat, with clear water and stable parameters.

Diet

Amano Shrimp are scavengers and primarily feed on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant material. They also consume leftover food in the tank. To ensure their health and longevity, supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets and algae wafers, along with occasional blanched vegetables like spinach and courgette.

Care

These shrimp are relatively hardy but require stable water conditions to thrive. They prefer water temperatures between 22°C to 28°C and a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Regular water changes are important to maintain their health. Avoid copper-based medications as they are toxic to shrimp.

Habitat

Amano Shrimp prefer a soft substrate such as sand or fine gravel. Adding live plants, rocks, and driftwood enhances their habitat and provides surfaces for grazing. These shrimp enjoy a low current, so ensure your filtration system provides a gentle flow to mimic their natural environment.

Breeding

Breeding Amano Shrimp in a home aquarium can be challenging, as they require brackish water for their larvae to develop. However, with the right conditions, they can reproduce successfully. Females carry their eggs under their abdomen until they hatch, but the larvae will need special care to reach maturity.

One arrived dead and one died in the first night but this was probably my fault as I has to rush aclimitisation.

Two dead on arrival and another died during two hours of acclamation. Normally I take longer but Amonia level was at 2.0 ppm on arrival so had to hurry a little, several days later none of the seven survivors can be seen. Perished or hiding?
