Fish Food FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about feeding fish, shrimp and snails.

How often should I feed my fish?

Feed most tropical fish a small amount once or twice a day, only as much as they eat in a couple of minutes. Our guide to feeding tropical fish explains more.

What is the best food for shrimp?

A complete staple such as Dennerle Shrimp King Complete covers everyday needs, Shrimp King Baby suits young shrimp, and Shrimp King Mineral supports healthy moulting. Dadap leaves give them something natural to graze.

What should I feed a betta fish?

Feed two or three quality betta pellets, such as Hikari Betta Bio Gold or Sera Bettagran, once or twice a day, with frozen bloodworm as a treat. Our betta fish feeding guide has a full feeding plan.

Is frozen bloodworm good for fish?

Yes, as a treat once or twice a week. Frozen bloodworm is rich in protein and brings out colour, but it should be thawed before feeding and is not a complete diet on its own. Read our guide to frozen fish food.

What do aquarium snails eat?

Snails graze algae and leftovers, but in a clean tank they need extra food. Dennerle Snail Stixx are made for them and add calcium for strong shells.

How do I know if I am overfeeding?

Food left on the bottom, cloudy water and algae are common signs. Remove anything fish have not eaten within a few minutes, or within a couple of hours for shrimp.

How should I store fish food?

Keep dry food sealed in a cool, dry place and use it within a few months of opening, as vitamins fade over time. Keep frozen food in the freezer and never refreeze it once thawed.

How are fish food orders delivered?
