Rainbowfish and Killifish FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about rainbowfish and killifish.
What are rainbowfish?
Rainbowfish are peaceful shoaling fish from Australia and New Guinea, known for their shimmering colour. Their colours develop as they mature, and males display their brightest colours to each other and to females.
What size tank do rainbowfish need?
The neon dwarf rainbow stays small but is an active swimmer, so keep a group of six or more in a long tank of 80 litres or more. The tiny spotted blue eye rainbow suits well planted nano tanks, as our spotted blue eye guide explains.
What are killifish?
Killifish are small, often brilliantly coloured fish found across Africa, Asia and the Americas. Normans lampeye killifish live in shoals and have glowing blue eyes, while Gardners killifish are known for their bold colours.
Can killifish live in a community tank?
Many can. Lampeyes are peaceful and shoal well with other small fish. Male Gardners killifish can squabble with each other, so keep one male with several females.
Do killifish jump?
Yes. Killifish are excellent jumpers, so keep a tight fitting lid on the tank.
What water conditions do rainbowfish and killifish need?
Rainbowfish do well between 23 and 27°C and cope with most UK tap water once it is treated. Killifish prefer softer water and slightly cooler temperatures of around 22 to 26°C, with plenty of plants and gentle flow.
What do rainbowfish and killifish eat?
Both take good quality flake and micro pellets, but they show their best colour when fed live or frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp a few times a week.
How are rainbowfish and killifish delivered?
Every fish is quarantined and health checked before it leaves us. Live fish are dispatched Monday to Wednesday by DEFRA approved overnight courier, so they spend just one night in transit, and every order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Read more about how live tropical fish are delivered.
