Guppy and Livebearer FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about guppies and other livebearers.

Are guppies good for beginners?

Yes. Guppy fish are hardy, peaceful, easy to feed and colourful, which makes them one of the best fish for a first tank. Our guppy fish care guide covers everything you need.

What are livebearers?

Livebearers give birth to free swimming young instead of laying eggs. Guppies, platies, mollies and swordtails are all livebearers, and all are easy to keep in a community tank.

Can I choose male or female guppies?

Yes. By default we send guppies in male and female pairs, but you can ask for all males or all females in your order note or by email. If you keep both, two or three females per male spreads the attention of the males. Read more about male guppies and female guppies.

Will my guppies breed?

Almost certainly, if you keep males and females together. Guppies breed every few weeks, and adult fish will eat the fry unless there is dense cover such as guppy grass or floating plants for them to hide in.

What water conditions do guppies need?

Guppies do well between 22 and 28°C and prefer harder, slightly alkaline water with a pH of around 7 to 8, which suits most UK tap water once it is dechlorinated.

What fish can live with guppies?

Peaceful fish such as platies, corydoras, small rasboras and many tetras make good tank mates. Avoid fin nippers such as tiger barbs. See our list of the best tank mates for guppies, or compare guppies vs tetras.

How often should I feed guppies?

Feed small amounts once or twice a day, only as much as they eat in a couple of minutes. Our guide on how often to feed guppies explains portion sizes and fasting days.

How are platies and swordtails different from guppies?

They need similar care but are a little larger and sturdier. Male swordtails have a long sword shaped extension on the tail, while platies such as the Santa Claus platy are stocky, peaceful and come in many colours.

How are guppies delivered?

Every fish is quarantined and health checked before it leaves us. Live fish are dispatched Monday to Wednesday by DEFRA approved overnight courier, so they spend just one night in transit, and every order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Read more about how live tropical fish are delivered.
