Goldfish FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about goldfish.

Do goldfish need a heater?

No. Goldfish are coldwater fish and are comfortable between 10 and 22°C, so a heater is not needed in a tank kept indoors.

Can goldfish live in a pond?

Yes. Comet goldfish and shubunkins are ideal pond fish and cope with UK winters as long as the pond is deep enough not to freeze solid. Fancy goldfish are slower swimmers and are best kept in an indoor tank.

How big do goldfish grow?

Comet goldfish can grow to 20cm or more given space, especially in a pond. Fancy goldfish such as the black moor and pearlscale goldfish have rounder bodies and stay more compact.

What size tank do goldfish need?

Goldfish grow large and produce a lot of waste, so give them plenty of water and a strong filter. A pair of fancy goldfish needs a tank of at least 100 litres, while comets do best in a large tank or a pond.

How long do goldfish live?

With good care, goldfish commonly live for 10 to 15 years, and pond goldfish can live even longer.

Are goldfish good for beginners?

Yes. Goldfish are hardy and forgiving, which makes them a great first fish, as long as they have enough space and good filtration. Always treat tap water with a conditioner first.

What is the difference between comet and fancy goldfish?

Comet goldfish have slim, streamlined bodies built for speed and suit ponds. Fancy goldfish have short, rounded bodies, often with long flowing fins or features such as the raised scales of the pearlscale, and are a little more delicate.

What do goldfish eat?

Feed a good quality goldfish flake or sinking pellet once or twice a day, with blanched peas or other vegetables as an occasional treat. Sinking food helps fancy goldfish avoid gulping air at the surface.

Can goldfish live with tropical fish?

We do not recommend it. Goldfish prefer cooler water than tropical fish, and comets grow large enough to bully or eat small tropical species.

How are goldfish delivered?

Every fish is quarantined and health checked before it leaves us. Live fish are dispatched Monday to Wednesday by DEFRA approved overnight courier, so they spend just one night in transit, and every order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Read more about how live tropical fish are delivered.
