Exotic Fish FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about our exotic and unusual fish.
Are exotic fish hard to keep?
Some are, and some are surprisingly easy. Many exotic freshwater fish need a larger tank, specific food or carefully chosen tank mates, so read the care notes on each product page before you buy.
How big do black ghost knife fish grow?
The black ghost knife fish can reach 40cm or more as an adult. It is nocturnal, needs a very large tank with tubes or caves to hide in, and will eat small fish, so keep one per tank with larger, peaceful companions.
Can red fin sharks live together?
Not usually. The rainbow red fin shark and albino red fin shark are territorial towards their own kind and similar looking fish, so keep one per tank with plenty of room and hiding places.
Is the leopard bush fish safe in a community tank?
Only with larger fish. The leopard bush fish is a calm ambush predator that will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth.
How do I keep bumblebee gobies?
Bumblebee gobies are tiny and territorial, do best with a little aquarium salt in hard water, and usually prefer live or frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp to flake.
How do I keep glass fish?
Indian glassy fish are peaceful shoaling fish, best kept in a group of six or more. They prefer small live or frozen foods and suit calm community tanks.
Can exotic fish live with community fish?
Some can and some cannot. Glass fish suit peaceful community tanks, while predators and territorial fish need carefully chosen tank mates. If you are unsure, email us before you buy.
