Danio and Rasbora FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about danios and rasboras.
How many danios or rasboras should I keep?
Keep at least six of the same species, and ten or more for tiny fish such as the chili rasbora. A bigger group shoals more tightly, shows better colour and feels more secure.
What size tank do danios and rasboras need?
Zebra danios are fast swimmers and need a tank of 60 litres or more with plenty of length. Harlequin rasboras suit a similar size, while chili and galaxy rasboras are true nano fish that suit well planted tanks from around 30 litres.
Are danios good for beginners?
Yes. Zebra danios are among the hardiest tropical fish you can buy, coping with a wide range of temperatures and water conditions, which makes them ideal for a first tank.
What temperature do danios and rasboras need?
Zebra danios are happy between 18 and 26°C, so they tolerate cooler tanks. Harlequin, chili and galaxy rasboras prefer it warmer, at around 22 to 27°C.
Are rasboras good for planted tanks?
Yes. Rasboras are peaceful, leave plants alone and show their best colour against dense planting. Our guide to the best fish for planted aquariums has more ideas, and our galaxy rasbora guide covers this popular nano fish.
What fish can live with danios and rasboras?
They mix well with other small, peaceful fish such as tetras, corydoras and small livebearers. Nano rasboras are also safe with adult shrimp.
What do danios and rasboras eat?
Feed small foods such as crushed flake, micro pellets and frozen or live foods like daphnia and baby brine shrimp, a little once or twice a day.
How are danios and rasboras delivered?
Every fish is quarantined and health checked before it leaves us. Live fish are dispatched Monday to Wednesday by DEFRA approved overnight courier, so they spend just one night in transit, and every order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Read more about how live tropical fish are delivered.
