Betta Fish FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about betta fish.
How long do betta fish live?
With consistent care, betta fish typically live for 3 to 5 years, sometimes longer. Clean, stable water matters most, as bettas can develop fin rot if water quality slips, so keep up regular partial water changes.
How big a tank do betta fish need?
We recommend at least 19 litres (5 gallons), which gives your betta room to swim and keeps the water stable. Starting from scratch? Our guide to setting up a new aquarium covers cycling, heaters and filtration.
Do betta fish need a filter and heater?
Yes. Bettas need warm, stable water between 24 and 27°C, so a reliable heater is essential, along with a gentle filter that won't push their long fins around. Our betta water temperature guide explains the ideal setup. Bettas breathe air from the surface, so leave calm areas and add live plants or decor near the top where they can rest.
What do betta fish eat?
Bettas are carnivores and do best on a quality betta pellet, with occasional treats such as bloodworm or daphnia once or twice a week. A varied diet keeps their colours vivid. Our betta feeding guide explains what and how often to feed.
Which betta fish should I choose?
Male bettas are bred for dramatic fins and tails, from halfmoon to crowntail, and make a striking centrepiece fish. Compare the options in our guide to male betta fish types. Female bettas are smaller, calmer and often less expensive.
Can female betta fish be kept together?
Yes, female bettas can sometimes live together in a sorority of 4 or more, in a larger, well planted tank with plenty of hiding spots. Watch them closely and separate any fish that is being bullied. Some keepers go on to try breeding bettas, which needs a dedicated setup.
Can betta fish live with other fish?
Never keep two male bettas together. A male betta can live alone or with small, peaceful tank mates such as corydoras catfish. Avoid fin nippers, gouramis and other long finned or brightly coloured fish, which he may treat as rivals. Every betta has its own personality, so read our guide to betta tank mates before adding company.
What is a Siamese fighting fish?
The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is another name for the betta: a small, colourful freshwater fish from Southeast Asia, named for the way males fight rival males.
How much do betta fish cost?
Our male bettas are £15 each, dropping to £11.25 each with multi-buy discounts, and mixed female bettas start from £6. See our full betta pricing guide for more detail.
How are betta fish delivered?
