Barb FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about tropical barbs.

How many barbs should I keep together?

Keep at least six of the same species. Barbs are active shoaling fish, and a good sized group shows better colour and spreads out any chasing.

Do tiger barbs nip fins?

They can. Tiger barbs are best kept in a group of eight or more, which keeps their nipping focused on each other, and away from slow, long finned fish such as bettas, angelfish and fancy guppies. Our tiger barb guide has more advice.

Which barbs are the most peaceful?

The cherry barb is one of the calmest barbs and suits most peaceful community tanks, with males turning a deep cherry red.

What size tank do barbs need?

Cherry and gold barbs are happy in a tank of 60 litres or more, while tiger barbs are busier and do best in 80 litres or more with plenty of swimming room.

What temperature do barbs need?

Most barbs do well between 22 and 27°C. Gold barbs are hardy and tolerate slightly cooler water.

What fish can live with barbs?

Barbs mix well with other lively, robust fish such as danios, larger tetras, corydoras and plecos.

What do barbs eat?

Barbs eat almost anything. Feed a good quality flake or micro pellet with frozen foods such as bloodworm as a treat, a little once or twice a day.

How are barbs delivered?

Every fish is quarantined and health checked before it leaves us. Live fish are dispatched Monday to Wednesday by DEFRA approved overnight courier, so they spend just one night in transit, and every order is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Read more about how live tropical fish are delivered.
