Aquarium Decor FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about aquarium decorations.
Why choose natural aquarium decor?
Natural rock and wood look more realistic than plastic ornaments and grow a layer of biofilm that fish, shrimp and snails love to graze. Our guide to natural aquarium decorations compares the options.
Do I need to clean rocks and wood before use?
Yes. Rinse rocks well to remove dust, and soak aquarium driftwood for a few days, changing the water, so it sinks and releases less colour into your tank.
Will aquarium rocks change my water?
Dragon stone is inert and safe for almost any tank. Some rocks can raise hardness and pH, so if you are unsure, add a few drops of vinegar: fizzing means the rock contains lime. Our guide to aquarium rocks explains more.
Why has my driftwood turned the water brown?
Wood releases tannins, which tint the water a tea colour. They are harmless and many fish enjoy them, but soaking the wood first, regular water changes and activated carbon will clear the colour.
Is aquarium wood safe for shrimp and snails?
Yes. Shrimp and snails graze the biofilm that grows on wood, and it gives them cover while they moult. Read about preparing wood in our mopani wood guide.
Do bettas need a cave?
A cave gives a betta fish somewhere to rest and feel secure. Our betta hiding cave and grey stone cave have smooth edges that will not tear long fins.
What is active soil?
Dennerle Shrimp King Active Soil is a substrate that softens water and lowers pH, ideal for crystal shrimp and many plants. Our crystal red shrimp guide explains why it matters.
