Angelfish and Cichlid FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we are asked most about angelfish and dwarf cichlids.
What size tank do angelfish need?
Angelfish grow tall as well as long, so choose a tank of at least 120 litres that is 45cm or more in height. Keep them as a small group or a pair, as they can squabble when kept in twos and threes.
Can angelfish live with neon tetras?
Young angelfish often can, but adults may eat very small fish such as neon tetras. Choose larger, peaceful tank mates such as bigger tetras, corydoras and plecos.
Are rams good for beginners?
Rams are best for keepers with a mature, stable tank. The German blue ram, electric blue ram and golden ram all need soft, slightly acidic water and warm temperatures of around 27 to 30°C.
What is an Apistogramma?
Apistogramma are small, colourful South American dwarf cichlids. Apistogramma agassizii likes soft water, plenty of plants and a cave to claim, and is best kept as one male with one or more females.
Are cichlids aggressive?
Angelfish and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma are fairly peaceful, but they can become territorial when breeding. Give them space, caves and plants to break up sight lines.
What water conditions do angelfish and cichlids need?
Most of our cichlids come from soft water rivers and do best between 25 and 28°C with a pH of around 6 to 7, and rams prefer it warmer still. Stable, clean water matters more than exact numbers, so keep up regular partial water changes.
What do angelfish and cichlids eat?
Feed a good quality flake or small pellet, with frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp a few times a week to bring out their colour. Browse our fish food.
