Bettas are carnivores by nature, built to eat insects, larvae and small invertebrates rather than plant matter. Getting their diet right supports the colour, energy and immune strength that make them such rewarding fish to keep. Here’s what (and how much) to feed.
Best Staple Foods for Bettas
A good quality betta pellet should form the base of the diet. Look for one where fish meal or a named protein is the first ingredient rather than fillers like wheat or soy, as bettas don’t digest plant-heavy foods well, and cheap flakes are often a poor fit for their small, upturned mouths. Pellets specifically formulated for bettas are usually sized and shaped for easy eating and tend to hold their colour-enhancing carotenoids better than generic tropical flake.
Treats and Variety
Frozen or freeze-dried bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp make excellent occasional treats and mimic the varied diet bettas would find in the wild. Live food is appreciated too, though frozen options are simpler to store safely and carry less risk of introducing parasites. Treats are best kept to a couple of times a week rather than a daily habit, alongside the regular pellets.
How Much and How Often to Feed
A useful rule of thumb is to offer only as much as would fit inside your betta’s eye in one sitting, once or twice a day. Bettas have small stomachs and are prone to overeating if given the chance, so it’s easy to offer too much without realising. Many keepers also give their betta one fasting day a week, which helps prevent constipation and bloating.
Common Feeding Mistakes
Overfeeding is by far the most common issue, showing up as bloating, floating or sinking problems linked to swim bladder trouble. Uneaten food left to rot in the tank also fouls the water, pushing up ammonia and undoing a lot of the good work covered in our betta fish temperature guide, so remove anything left after a couple of minutes rather than letting it sit.
A consistent, varied diet is one of the simplest ways to support a long, healthy life. See our guide to betta fish lifespan for more on the factors that make the biggest difference. You can browse our current betta fish here.
